Trading XAU/USD in the FxPro Terminal

Finding gold, sizing the order and setting the exit are three separate actions, and doing them in that order keeps the risk visible before the click.

Finding XAU/USD in the terminal

Gold sits under the metals group rather than under the forex majors, and its symbol is XAU/USD on every FxPro platform. In MT4 and MT5 you open the Market Watch panel, right-click, choose Symbols, expand the metals section and enable XAU/USD so it appears in the list; in cTrader and the FxPro app the same instrument is found through the symbol search.

Once it is on the watchlist, open the chart and check the price against the reference of about 4275.0 so you know you are looking at the right instrument and not a proxy. One standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, which is the arithmetic every later calculation depends on.

Sizing the order with the calculators

Size the position before you open the order ticket, not inside it. The position size calculator takes your account balance, the stop distance in pips and the risk you are willing to take, and returns the lot size; the pip value calculator turns that lot size into shillings per pip so the risk is a number you recognise; the margin calculator shows what the position ties up at the leverage cap, which for a 0.10-lot gold position is about $85.50.

The order of use matters. Position size first, because it depends on the stop; pip value second, to translate the risk into your base currency; margin last, to confirm the free margin left after entry. Doing it in the other order, sizing from the margin you have rather than the risk you accept, is how a gold position ends up larger than the account can carry.

Setting the exit with the entry

Set the stop loss and take profit in the same ticket as the entry, so the position cannot exist without a defined exit. The stop distance is what the position size calculator was built on, so changing it after entry invalidates the size; if you want a wider stop, re-run the calculator and reduce the lot rather than widening the stop on a position already open.

The profit calculator gives the result at the target before you commit, which is the honest way to see whether the reward justifies the risk. Gold moves in large shilling amounts per pip at standard lot size, so the difference between a planned exit and an improvised one is usually the difference between a small loss and an account-level one. FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA — not by the CMA of Kenya, and trading gold on margin carries the risk of losing more than you deposit.

Why XAU/USD Appears Under Several Names in the FxPro Symbol List

Gold against the US dollar is the same instrument whether the platform labels it XAU/USD, GOLD, or GOLDUSD, but the exact ticker depends on the platform you are using. On MT4 and MT5 the symbol tree may show a suffix added by the broker entity that serves Kenya, so a symbol like XAU/USD plus a short code is the same contract with the same 100 oz lot size. On cTrader and the FxPro app the naming follows the platform's own convention, which is why the list can look different across the four platforms. Always confirm the quote is near the reference price of 4275.0 before you trade.

The number of gold symbols you see depends on how many account types and server groups are loaded into your terminal, not on there being several different gold markets. A single FxPro login can show a spot gold symbol and a separate gold symbol tied to a different account currency or entity, and each carries its own contract specification. Rather than picking the first gold entry, open the specification window and check that the contract size is 100 oz and the pip value is 0.01. That check takes seconds and prevents you from sizing an order against the wrong symbol.

If the symbol you expect is missing, the cause is usually the Market Watch filter rather than an unavailable market. Right-click in Market Watch, choose Show All, and the full list including the gold ticker for your entity will populate. On cTrader the symbol search box does the same job, and the FxPro app lists instruments by category. Once found, drag the correct XAU/USD symbol into your chart template so every future order uses the verified contract. Do not rely on a saved template from another broker, because ticker names and suffixes do not transfer cleanly between servers.

What One Lot of XAU/USD Actually Represents in Ounces and Dollars

One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 troy ounces of gold, so the notional value of a single lot at the reference price of 4275.0 is 100 times 4275.0, or $427,500. That notional is the exposure you control, not the cash you need to open the trade. The margin requirement is a fraction of it set by the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Kenya. At that cap, a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50 margin, which shows how far the margin figure sits below the notional contract value.

The pip value on gold is fixed by the contract size, not by the price level. Because one pip is 0.01 and one lot is 100 oz, a one-pip move on a standard lot is 100 times 0.01, or $1.00. A 0.10-lot position therefore moves $0.10 per pip, and a 0.01-lot micro position moves $0.01 per pip. Converting to Kenya shillings depends on the USD/KES rate at the time, so treat the dollar pip value as the stable figure and the shilling figure as indicative. This is the number to use when you decide whether a stop distance is affordable.

Position size and contract size are different decisions, and confusing them is the most common sizing error on gold. The contract size of 100 oz is fixed by the instrument; your lot size is the variable you choose. A 0.10-lot order is 10 oz of gold exposure, not 0.10 oz. Before sending any order, read the volume field in the order ticket and multiply by 100 to confirm the ounces you are actually controlling. If the resulting dollar risk per pip feels large relative to your account, reduce the lot size rather than widening the stop to compensate.

Placing the Stop-Loss in the Same Order Ticket as the Entry

The stop should be attached at the moment you submit the entry, using the stop-loss field in the order ticket, because a position that opens without a stop is unprotected for as long as it takes you to add one. On MT4 and MT5 the order ticket has a stop-loss box beside the entry price, and on cTrader the same protection is set in the order panel before you click send. The FxPro app follows the same pattern. Entering the stop before submission means the server holds the instruction from the first tick, rather than relying on you to return to the terminal.

The stop distance itself depends on where the trade idea is invalidated, not on a fixed number of pips. On XAU/USD with a pip of 0.01, a stop 200 pips from entry is a $2.00 move in price, which on a 0.10-lot position is $20.00 of risk. Work backwards from the dollar amount you are willing to lose, divide by the per-pip value of your lot size, and that gives the maximum stop distance your account can carry. If the chart needs a wider stop than that, the correct response is a smaller lot, not a tighter stop that the market will likely hit.

A stop entered with the entry order is visible to the broker's server and survives a platform disconnect, which a mental stop does not. Check after submission that the stop appears in the terminal's trade tab and in the position list, because an order rejected for an invalid stop level will open without protection. If the stop is rejected, close the position immediately and resubmit with a valid level rather than leaving it naked while you investigate. This single habit does more for account survival than any entry technique.

Reading the Swap Line on an XAU/USD Position Held Past the Daily Cut

The swap line shows the overnight financing adjustment applied to a gold position held past the broker's daily rollover time, and it can be a credit or a debit depending on the direction of the trade and the rates in force. Gold is a leveraged metal position, so holding it overnight involves a financing cost or benefit that is separate from the spread and commission. The swap figure is not fixed; it depends on the broker's financing rates, the side of the trade, and prevailing interest rate conditions. Read the current swap values in the instrument specification rather than assuming a number.

The swap is charged per lot per night, so a 0.10-lot position attracts one-tenth of the published per-lot swap, and the amount is deducted from or added to your account balance at rollover. On Wednesdays many brokers apply a triple swap to account for the weekend, which means a position held through that rollover can cost or earn three times the normal nightly figure. Because the exact per-lot swap is set by the broker and changes with rates, the practical step is to open the specification window and read the long and short swap values before deciding to hold a gold position overnight.

A swap line does not change your entry or exit price, but it does change the break-even level of a multi-day position. If the swap is a debit, the position must move further in your favour just to cover the financing, which matters when your target is measured in tens of pips. For short holds within a single trading session the swap is irrelevant; for positions held for days it becomes a real cost that belongs in the trade plan. Check the swap before the rollover, not after, because the adjustment is applied automatically and cannot be reversed.

Confirming the Margin Figure Before the Order Leaves the Ticket

The margin figure shown in the order ticket is the amount of account equity the broker reserves while the position is open, and on gold it is calculated from the notional value divided by the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Kenya. At that cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which is the number to compare against your available margin before submission. If the required margin is close to your free margin, the position is too large for the account regardless of how good the setup looks, because a small adverse move will trigger a margin call.

Margin is not the same as risk, and treating the two as equal is a common source of blown accounts. The $85.50 margin on a 0.10-lot position is locked capital, but the amount you can actually lose is set by the stop distance, which may be several times larger. Before sending the order, subtract the required margin from your free margin and confirm the remainder is enough to absorb the stop-loss loss without a margin call. If it is not, the lot size must come down until both the margin and the stop risk fit inside the account.

The margin requirement can change if the broker adjusts leverage on gold, so a figure that was correct last month may not be correct today. The order ticket recalculates the requirement at the current cap each time you open it, which is why you should read the ticket rather than rely on a remembered number. Fund the account through M-Pesa as usual, then check that the deposit has settled before sizing a position, because margin is calculated on cleared equity. A margin figure you have not verified in the ticket is an assumption, not a fact.

Where the Regulatory Status of the Entity Fits Into Platform Choice

FxPro is licensed by the FCA in the UK, CySEC in Cyprus and the FSCA in South Africa, but it is not licensed by the CMA of Kenya, so the entity serving Kenyan clients operates under an offshore permission rather than local CMA oversight. That distinction matters on the platform page because the leverage cap, the swap rates and the available instruments all follow the entity that holds your account, not the brand name on the app. Before depositing, confirm in your account documents which entity you are contracted with and which regulator appears on the client agreement.

Regulatory status does not change how XAU/USD behaves on the chart, but it does determine the leverage cap that sets your margin. The cap is a ceiling, not a setting to aim for, and using the maximum available leverage on gold is how small accounts fail quickly. The worked figure of about $85.50 margin for a 0.10-lot position is calculated at the applicable cap, so if your account sits under a different entity the ticket will show a different requirement. Read the ticket, not a forum post, because the entity is what the server enforces.

Kenyan traders fund through M-Pesa, and the funding route does not change the regulatory position of the account. What changes is the speed at which equity arrives and therefore how quickly a margin figure becomes relevant. Treat the CMA caveat as a prompt to read the client agreement and the risk disclosure before trading gold, not as a reason to skip them. The platform tools are the same across entities; the protection and the leverage are not, and the difference is set out in the documents you accept at sign-up.

FAQ

Common questions

Where do I find XAU/USD in the terminal?

Look for the symbol XAU/USD in the market watch or symbol list, then drag it onto a chart. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app the code is the same, so once you have found it on one platform you will recognise it on the others. Confirm the contract size reads 100 oz before trading.

How do I size my first gold order without guessing?

Start from the money you are willing to lose, not from the lot box. One standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, so work out the pip value for your chosen size with our pip value calculator, then check the margin with our margin calculator. At the applicable cap, 0.10 lot needs about $85.50 margin.

What does one pip mean on XAU/USD in shillings?

One pip on gold is 0.01 of a dollar per ounce, so on one standard lot of 100 oz a single pip is one dollar of profit or loss before conversion. In KSh that figure moves with the exchange rate. Our pip value calculator converts it for the size you actually plan to trade.

How far is the reference price from where I should set my stop?

There is no fixed distance; it depends on the volatility you see and the loss you can accept. The reference price near 4275.0 is only a marker, not a target. Decide your stop in dollars first, convert it to pips, then let our position size calculator tell you the lot size that fits.

Can I practise on gold before risking money?

Yes, use a demo account on the same platform you will trade live, because the order ticket and symbol search behave the same way. Practise placing a 0.10-lot order and reading the margin figure. When you go live, keep the same size until the mechanics feel routine.
